Ostriches roaming outside of Baghdad

Ostriches (Struthio camelus) are the largest, heaviest and fastest birds found on planet Earth, with a top speed at 70 km/h. Ostriches can be found in large areas of sub-Saharan Africa, and, prior to the mid-20th century extinction of a particular subspecies, they could also be found in the Arabian Peninsula.

History

During the 9th century, ostriches could be found roaming the fields surrounding the city of Baghdad.
