Offchurch

Offchurch was a small Anglo-Saxon crypt in the south-west corner of Ledecestrescire, England. Located by the rivers of Awry and Alne, it was largely secluded from the rest of the region in a remote forest. It was for this reason that the Mercian thegn Leofrith chose it as the hiding spot for his king Burgred, who hid there after the Sons of Ragnar captured the Mercian stronghold of Tamworth in a siege.[1]
However, Burgred did not remain hidden for long as the Viking Eivor Varinsdottir, an ally of the Sons of Ragnar, travelled there to search for the king after learning of his location from Queen Æthelswith. Eivor defeated Burgred in combat and tied him up, carrying him out of the crypt in a backdoor entrance to rendezvous with Sigurd and the Ragnarssons in Venonis.[1]
