Michael III (840 – 867) also known as Michael the Drunkard was Byzantine Emperor from 842 to 867.

Biography[edit | edit source]

Late in his reign, Michael III greatly favored the Macedonian courtier and chamberlain Basil[1] and eventually crowned him as co-emperor on 26 May 866. Basil, who eventually gained increasing influence over Michael, later had Michael assassinated, becoming solo emperor of the Byzantine Empire.[2]
