Martin Waldseemüller (c.1470 – 1520) was a German cartographer and scholar during the Renaissance.

In 1507, after the Florentine navigator Amerigo Vespucci noted that the lands he discovered were separated from Asia, Martin proposed to label them Americas in his honor.[1]

Ezio and Sofia studying Waldseemüller map

Later, Martin created a map of the World with the Americas and a new ocean. One reproduction was sent to the librarian Sofia Sartor in Constantinople in 1511. As the Ottomans blocked the ship in the port, the Italian Assassin Mentor Ezio Auditore Da Firenze discreetly recovered the map and delivered it to Sartor, studying the map together.[2]
