Maria and her daughter Olga

Maria Feodorovna (née Dagmar of Denmark 1847 – 1928) was the wife of Alexander III and Empress of Russia from 1881 to 1894.[1] She was the sister of Alexandra of Denmark and, through her, the sister-in-law to Edward VII.[2]

Biography

Dagmar was engaged to tsesarevich Nicholas, but he fell ill and passed in 1865, before they could marry,[2] with his final wish being that she marry his younger brother.[1] The pair quickly became engaged and married in 1866, with Edward VII and Alexandra attending.[2] Maria bore Alexander five children that survived infancy; Nicholas, George, Xenia, Michael, and Olga.[3]

On 29 October 1888,[4] Maria was onboard the imperial train enroute to Saint Petersburg from a family retreat in Crimea. The family's cart was disturbed by the Assassin Nikolai Orelov on a mission to assassinate her husband. Maria held her youngest daughter as they looked on in fear as Alexander came back into their cart to find the Assassin. During a scuffle, the train derailed with the royal family being miraculously unharmed, though the Assassin got away.[5]
