Manius Calvisius
Manius Calvisius was the engineer to Roman Emperor Nero stationed in Roman Britain.
Biography
Known as a capable engineer with a cunning and diabolical imagination, Manius was assigned by Nero to make access to the tombs of the heroes of the Britons difficult but without sealing them away or defiling them, for doing so would bring a storm of ill fortune upon Nero, according to his soothsayer. Though he thought the Emperor mad for this order, he was determined to follow it.[1]
At his workshop, he designed and tested a variety of traps he would install in the tombs, making ample use of spikes. Manius also investigated mechanisms by long-forgotten peoples, both at the tombs and in the caves his workshop was located at. Though he managed to complete his task, he was frustated at not being able to figure out how to open the "final entrance" in the chamber preceding his workshop.[1]
Behind the scenes
Manius Calvisius is a character mentioned throughout the second Forgotten Tombs update for Assassin's Creed: Valhalla, released in September 2022.
The name Manius was a common Latin praenomen, derived from mane "the morning", or the archaic adjective manus "good". Alternatively, Manius was for children born in February (Februarius), the month sacred to the manes, the souls of the dead.[2] The gentile name (nomen gentilicium) Calvisius, belonged to the Calvisia gens, an ancient Roman family which produced many notable consuls.[3]
