A lyre is a type of sting instrument similar to a harp and widely used in Greek antiquity and later periods.

History

During the Peloponnesian War, Spartan misthios Kassandra met a lyre player named Timon near the port of Orchomenos in Boeotia. He played a sad song, hoping that if he played the instrument near water his brother would hear as he traveled down the Styx into the afterlife. At another point in her life, Kassandra met the poet Praxilla and recovered her lyre, though it had been damaged. She then helped Praxilla's lyre maker Timycha collect the needed materials for the repair.

In the 1st century BCE Medjay Bayek of Siwa met the famous bard Fire Eyes and retrieved his lyre from a shipwreck.
