This article is about the statue of Zeus on Kephallonia. For other uses, see Statue of Zeus.
Lightning Zeus

Lightning Zeus was a gigantic marble statue of the Greek god Zeus, located on Mount Ainos in Kephallonia.

History[edit | edit source]

At some point during his time, the Athenian general Themistokles visited the statue, documenting his impressions of it onto a papyrus and hiding the papyrus near the statue.[1]

Decades later during the Peloponnesian War, the Spartan misthios Kassandra visited the statue at the request of Artaxerxes I, a former and blinded King of Persia who was seeking refuge in Megara. While exploring the statue, Kassandra recovered Themistokles' papyrus and returned to Artaxerxes to report her findings.[1]

Trivia[edit | edit source]

  • In the game, the statue was depicted as such to mirror the geophysical phenomena of Mount Ainos, which was known for its thunderstorms.
  • In real history, no such statue of this size or description existed in Kephallonia, or anywhere in Greece for that matter. The statue within the game is a reference to the 2010 film Clash of the Titans, which features a nearly identical statue of Zeus.
