Amenmesse (unknown – 1198 BCE) was a pharaoh of the Nineteenth Dynasty of Egypt.

During his reign, Amenmesse constructed a pyramid near the city of Arsinoe on the Sinai. The pyramid was later pillaged by Ptahmose in 38 BCE to fund the wars of Egypt and Rome at the behest of Gaius Julius Rufio.

Trivia

It is certainly strange that a pharaoh of the 19th dynasty would build his tomb in Sinai peninsula ,a provincial backwater of Egypt. However, Amenmesse is one of the pharaohs we know very little about. He challenged the rule of his brothers in the aftermath of his father Rameses II death and is known to have controlled parts of Egypt concurently with his brother Seti II. For this he was condemned to damnatio memoriae after being ousted from power. Some researchers like M.Georg and Ralf Krauss suggest Amenmesse, his name and his conflict with his brother could be the basis for the stories of biblical Moses so game might be implying that after being expelled from Thebes he carved out a kingdom for himself in Sinai peninsula.
