Statue of Kali

Kali is a Hindu goddess associated with time, power, creation, and destruction, especially that of evil forces.

Influence

In India she was the patron goddess of the Hindu sect the Thuggee.[1]

After her move to India, the British Assassin Evie Frye developed an interest in the goddess.[2]

Around 1873, Evie's brother, Jacob Frye came to visit her and their Indian brethren with some apprentices. Jacob, Evie and Henry Green visited a temple of Kali, along with one of Jacob's initiates, 'Jack the Lad', and they had their picture taken.[3] As a souvenir, Evie gave Jacob a statue of Kali.[2]

When Evie returned to London in 1888, she found a note Jacob had left for her inside the statue, helping her with her investigation into the Whitechapel murders.[3]

Evie also discovered brass knuckles which the Indian Assassins had made, but which, by 1888, were held in a chest in the Owers Manor.[4]
