Izumo no Okuni (c.1578 – c.1613) was a Japanese entertainer and shrine maiden.

Around 1603, Izumo devised a way of advertising her wares by dancing on a stage, usually cross-dressing as a man with swords and doing comedy vignettes. Many came to watch her performance, including Portuguese merchants.[1] Izumo's work is thought of being the beginning of both Kabuki theater[2] and the profession of the Geisha.[1]
