Horatio Gates
Horacio Lloyd Gates (1727 – 1806) was a army officer and a general in the Continental Army during the early years of the American Revolutionary War.
Biography
Around the time Gates had led the army to a decisive victory at Saratoga and head of the army George Washington had taken losses at Germantown and Brandywine, Gates maintained correspondence with Major General Thomas Conway, who mainly discussed Washington's failings. When Washington learned of the letters, he took it as a sign that both his subordinates were conspiring behind his back to replace him and Gates and Conway had to explain themselves before Congress. The episode, which became known as the "Conway Cabal", ended with Gates apologizing and Conway being forced to resign.[1]
