Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and the Queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology.

Hippolyta was was said to have been gifted a girdle from Ares, which signified her authority as queen of the Amazons. During the Peloponnesian War, a Daughters of Artemis hideout in southern Argolis was dedicated to her.

In around 431 BCE, the Spartan misthios Kassandra recovered a belt that was said to have been owned by Hippolyta.[1]
