Hippolyta was the daughter of Ares and the Queen of the Amazons in Greek mythology.

During her lifetime, Hippolyta was gifted a girdle from Ares, which signified her authority as queen of the Amazons. During the Peloponnesian War, a Daughters of Artemis hideout in southern Argolis was attributed to her. In addition, the Spartan misthios, Kassandra, recovered a belt that was said to be the same belt that Hippolyta used to possess.[1]
