The Hippodrome of Constantinople was a circus that was the sporting and social center of Constantinople, capital of the Byzantine Empire. During modern times, it was a square named Sultanahmet Meydanı (English: Sultan Ahmet Square) and was sometimes referred to by Turkish residents as the Atmeydanı (English: Horse Square). By the 21thcentury, only a few fragments of the original structure remained.[1]
