Hastein was a 9th century Dane Viking chieftain.

Biography

Hastein spent many years during the 860s to the 880s raiding Frankish territory on the European continent. Then in the early-890s Hastein and his men landed on the shore of Kent, England. They were quickly met with opposition from ætheling Edward and his brother-in-law, Æthelred. In 893, they attempted to take Buttington Fortress, the siege reached a stalemate and only when Hastein's men were starving he decided to try one more last ditch effort against Æthelred's army. They were quickly defeated however, and the remaining Vikings fled into Essex, Hastein among them.[1]
