The Hanlin Academy was an academic and administrative institution of higher learning founded during the Tang dynasty by Emperor Xuanzong. Located in Chang'an, the academy lasted until the early 20th century, surviving a fire in 1900 and later closed in 1911.

In 742, Li Bai, one of the Tang period's most acclaimed poets, was honoured by Emperor Xuanzong with a position at the academy. There, he was retained as an entertainer for banquets and to compose poems for the imperial family.[1]
