Ezio, my friend! How may I be of service?

This article is in desperate need of a revamp. Please improve it in any way necessary in order for it to achieve a higher standard of quality in accordance with our Manual of Style.

"Gaspar de la Croix. Engineer. Marksman. Recluse. He frightens me, but his technical skills are unprecedented."
Fiora Cavazza.[src]

Gaspar de la Croix (1466 - 1503) was a master engineer, marksman and a member of the Templar Order. He was frequently used by Cesare Borgia to take down easy targets on the field at the start of a battle.

His genetic memories were later used by Abstergo Industries for the training of the Animus recruits, under the title of the Engineer.

Biography

Working for the Borgia

In 1503, Gaspar was visited by Fiora Cavazza, who had come on Cesare's request to pick up several parts and equipment that the engineer had repaired. When she arrived at his workshop, she discovered him singing a remorseful song in French, and hesitated to interrupt him.[1]

Throughout her stay, Fiora saw Gaspar as distant and haunted, particularly after he began asking her uncomfortable questions, such as whether she had witnessed death, and if death was driven by fate, chance or choice.[1]

Finally, as she departed, Gaspar refused to accept the payment for his services, and was left tinkering with a firearm, which he thoughtfully aimed out his front window at the passing crowd.[1]

Death

"I don't scare easily!"
―Gaspar as he is chased by Ezio[src]

Later that same year in Rome, Gaspar fought to suppress a group of citizens, who had attempted to form a resistance against the Borgia. He wielded his arquebus skillfully, and was able to kill many from a distance. However, when the uprising had dwindled to the last man, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze chanced upon the scene, and sought to help them.[2]

As Gaspar killed the final insurgent, a man whos wife or daughter, Anna, was shot dead by Gaspar, Ezio charged at the engineer, who quickly chose to flee. Eventually though, Gaspar reached a dead end, and although he tried to fight back, he was fatally stabbed by the Assassin's hidden blade.[2]

Dialogue of Gaspar's demise

Ezio comes across a man hiding behind a wall.

  • Man: Get down! He is still out there!
  • Ezio: Who?
  • Man: One of Borgia's dogs! We tried to build a resistenza (resistance). He came to our house and began firing his arquebuse! My poor little Anna, she's... I've got to get back!
  • Ezio: Just one shooter? He will be easy to overtake. He cannot be very accurate--

A shot is fired very close to Ezio.

  • Ezio: Merda! (Shit!)
  • Man: He will kill us if we stay here! Listen. I will run to the next pillar to draw his fire. Try to flank him!

Ezio lays Gaspar to rest.

The man begins to run but is quickly shot down by the gunman.

  • Ezio: Adesso basta! (Enough of this!)

Ezio begins to chase Gaspar.

  • Gaspar: I don't scare easily!
    Merda, merda, merda!

Ezio catches up to Gaspar and assassinates him.

  • Ezio: Requiescat in pace. (Rest in peace.)

Database Entry

Date of Birth: 1466
Profession: Sniper

I found this in Abstergo's database: "Gaspar de la Croix is a master weapons engineer as well as an expert marksman.

Although the profession of sniper didn't exist yet in the 16th century, Gaspar was something of a pioneer. His skill with a firearm spared him any close confrontations on the battlefield and Cesare made use of his skill to take down easy targets at the beginning of a fight.[2]

Trivia

  • "De la Croix" is of French origin and means "from the cross," a reference to his affiliation with the Templars.
  • Gaspar fights like an Arquebusier.
  • Gaspar is one of the few targets that you cannot kill unnoticed.
  • After the assassination, Ezio closes Gaspar's eyes the same way as he always does, even though Gaspar is wearing glasses.
