Garden of Kynosarges was a garden attributed to the hero Didymos, located outside of Athens in Attika, Greece.

When Didymos was about to perform a sacrifice to the god Dionysos, a white dog snatched the sacrificial animal from him. He went on to create a garden in honor of the dog’s swiftness and cunning.[1]

Trivia

  • Instead of dog statues, the garden features multiple statues of lions. As well as a statue generally identified as the god Apollo.
  • Historically, Didymos was said to have built a temple in honor of the hero Herakles, his mother Alcmene and his nephew Iolaos.
  • The name of the place gave birth to the story, explaining it as κῠνός ἀργός (kunós argós).
