Amanita muscaria, commonly known as the fly agaric, is a type of mushroom of the genus Amanita, native to the temperate and boreal regions of the Northern Hemisphere.

During the 9th century, the Viking shieldmaiden Eivor Varinsdottir of the Raven Clan often encountered the mushrooms throughout her travels across Anglo-Saxon England. Ingesting the mushroom would induce hallucinations which last a short period of time.
