Flax

Flax, or linseed, is a flowering plant in the family Linaceae and is harvested for its use as a food or a fiber. With its fibers, flax was utilized to create many products, such as textiles, linen, and cloth.
History
During the Peloponnesian War in southwestern Elis, Greece, the village farm, Linou Farm, was created after a small cult dedicated to the Spartan misthios Kassandra took root in the Plains of Flax and soon became self-sufficient, due to the abundance of flax from its fields.[1]
During the Renaissance in Florence, Italy, flax merchants were known to frequent the marketplace of Mercato Vecchio, the center of Florentine business.[2]
During the early 16th century in Rome, Italy, flax was collected by the Assassins Francesco Vecellio, Tessa Varzi, and Cipriano Enu, of the Italian Brotherhood during their missions against the Templar Cesare Borgia. The flax fibers were used, along with a needle, to sew and create a sailcloth.[3]
During the American Revolutionary War, flax was bought and sold as a commodity in the thirteen colonies. The Kanien'kehá:ka-born Master Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton used the flax fibers, with other materials, to create rope darts. In fact, Ratonhnhaké:ton used the flax to create materials, at Davenport Homestead, such as a Linsey-Woolsey and paper, and medication, like digestive tonics.[4]
