Alejandro O'Reilly
Alejandro, Conde de O'Reilly (1722 – 23 March 1794) was an Irish-born military reformer and Inspector-General of Infantry for the Spanish Empire during the latter half of the 18th century.
During the Louisiana Rebellion of 1768, the Spanish governor of Louisiana, Antonio de Ulloa, was deposed. With the approval of King Louis XV of France, the Spanish assigned O'Reilly to crush the rebellion and punish the leaders responsible.
The leaders of the French Creole rebellion urged citizens to avoid military confrontation and accept Spanish authority, in order to avoid further bloodshed. O'Reilly arrived largely unopposed in New Orleans in August 1769. In order to quell the rebellion, he had six of its leaders executed. He also introduced "O'Reilly's Code", which embodied the laws of Castile and of the Indies and aligned Louisiana's legal system with that of Spain. Additionally, O'Reilly eased restrictions on the emancipation of slaves.
