The Fancy Pistol is an ornate and red dueling flintlock pistol from the 18th century. One was used by the French Director of Finances Gabriel Beaudoin to kill himself during the French Revolution after being tricked into believing he was haunted by the Red Ghost of the Tuileries. This same pistol was then bestowed to the Assassin Arno Dorian after he discovered that Counselor Hervé LeGall was the one responsible for driving Beaudoin into suicide.

Description

The Fancy Pistol is so-named because it is fairly exquisite in design. With a frame carved from a rich mahogany-colored wood, it is likely that the target demographic of the model were aristocrats or other typical patron of the arts. Though designed to be aesthetically pleasing, the firearm was still boasted greater firepower than the pistol used by contemporary French military officers. It was a decent weapon for its time, but like any other flintlock pistols, its capacity was limited to only one shot.

History

At some point between April 1796 and July 1797, a pair of Fancy Pistols was set down in a case at a gambling den in Paris frequented by the Minister of Finance Gabriel Beaudoin. Beaudoin, who worked at the Tuileries Palace, took one of the pistols with him and shot himself through the mouth not long afterwards in his office. His suicide was the result of a ruse by his assistant, Counselor Hervé LeGall, to drive him insane by masquerading as the Red Ghost of the Tuileries, the supposed phantom of LeGall's ancestor Johannes Metzger. After the Assassin Arno Dorian of the Parisian Brotherhood determined that LeGall was the culprit behind the affair, he was rewarded by Police Minister Charles Cochon de Lapparent with Beaudoin's pistol.
