"Only a mind free of impediments is capable of grasping the chaotic beauty of the world."
―Maria Thorpe quoting Empedokles, 1193[src]-[m]

Empedocles (c. 494 – c. 434 BCE) was a Greek philosopher who lived in Greek Sicily during the 5th century BCE. He recorded his ideas in the poetic work, On Nature.

In 1193, the Templar Maria Thorpe quoted the philosopher to Altaïr Ibn-La'Ahad while she was his captive.[1]

During the early 16th century, the Assassin Ezio Auditore da Firenze retrieved a hidden copy of this book in Constantinople.[2]

Trivia

  • While a copy of the poem is retrieved in-game by Ezio, in real life the book remains lost, with only a quarter of it having survived in fragments.
