Abu Rayhan Muhammad ibn Ahmad al-Biruni (973 – c. 1050), better known as al-Biruni, was a Persian scholar and polymath during the Islamic Golden Age.

One of al-Biruni's many claims to fame was the improvements made to the calculations of the Earth's circumference, previously made by Greek scientist Eratosthenes and later replicated by al-Khwarizmi and his team.[1] al-Biruni achieved this by using a mountain as a measuring rod.[2]
