During the Italian Renaissance, Ezio Auditore was able to dual-wield weapons during combat. The pistol acted as a dual weapon to any primary weapon that was a medium-type, like Swords and maces, and the throwing knives acted as dual weapons for the short blade (similarly to the Assassins in the High Middle Ages). The poison darts were used with the poison blade.

Dual-wielding weapons offered many more types of counter kills and finishing moves, as well as allowing Assassins to smoothly shift between long-range and short-range attacks.

Dual wielding was also done by a few enemies like the Papal Guards and Cesare Borgia, who were both able to dual wield a pistol and a long sword.
