The Devil's Acre was a notorious slum in the otherwise resplendent London borough of Westminster. Located not far from the Palace of Westminster, the slum was seen by many politicians as being representative of the woes they sought to destroy, unlike the larger borough of Whitechapel, which was some distance away.

In 1868 Jacob Frye escorted Mary Anne Disraeli, wife of the then-British Prime Minsiter, Benjamin Disraeli, into the Devil's Acre when the latter desired a tour of the area.
