Following the explosion of a first atomic bomb dropped on the city of Hiroshima, Japan, on August 6, 1945, the United States released another near the center of Nagasaki, at 11:30 am, on August 9, 1945.

Three days later, the {{Wiki|Hirohito|Emperor of Japan]] announced his country's surrender. It is estimated that around 70,000 deaths are directly related to the effects of the bomb while more than 75,000 suffered from injuries.
