No English waterway has greater reach than the River Severn. Named after a nymph drowned long ago in legend, its value as a trading and military route was recognized by the Romans who built many settlements and fortifications along its banks. The River Severn is known to reverse course when the tide is strong, a marvel to the observant and a menace to the unwary.
