Donations to the Church, owning family palaces or art patronage were classic ways to gain prestige. Sponsoring public celebrations also fit the bill. This may have included organizing shows of fireworks, a novelty recently brought back from China and one that surely amazed large audiences. With time, fireworks even became a specialty in Venice, during the Carnival and other celebrations.
