Plantation owners in the colonies were generally wealthy, white Europeans. Ruling in absentia most of the time, they delegated their authority to overseers who controlled the day-to-day production of the plantation.

The overseers were the people in charge of running the plantations' day-to-day activities, administering discipline and often acting in place of the true owners.
