Tough mail-clad soldiers on horses with lances and shields, the Frankish Heavy Cavalry were Charles' secret weapon. Ranging over the Frankish countryside, they eventually gave rise to the romantic heraldry of mounted knights. In 9th Century Francia, there was nothing romantic about them. They were simply the most dangerous opponents you would ever face.
