Arranged flowers were a central part of Japanese ritual and decoration, including at events surrounding tea ceremonies, seasonal celebrations, and religious prayer. In response to cultural shifts in the Azuchi–Momoyama period, the style of ceramic flower vases began to tend toward "wabi-sabi," allowing their imperfections to shine as a symbol of life's transience.
