Arranged flowers were a central part of Japanese ritual and decoration, including at events surrounding tea ceremonies, seasonal celebrations, and religious prayer. In response to cultural shifts in the Azuchi-Momoyama period, the style of ceramic flower vases began to tend toward "wabi-sabi," allowing their imperfections to shine as a symbol of life's transience.
