Flann's entourage was mostly comprised of the courts of kings who shared in his lineage, Clann Cholmáin. But unlike the army to the north, Flann's army was a healthy mix of both the Southern Uí Néill who supported him and the Vikings he enlisted for aid.

Ah yes, the old "enemy of my enemy" approachs. But in Flann's case, that approach could, and would, yield results.

The Danes of Ireland were stil licking their wounds after multiple battles lost to the previous High King, Áed Findliath. Flann's goal was to put an end to the alternating succession of the kingship once and for all, and he would welcome all who might help him achieve it (though he never would, despite a long and dominating reign).
