Depending on which Edda you prefer, Poetic or Prose, the dwarves of Norse myth were either born of the flesh and bone of Ymir, the entity at the centre of Nordic creation legends, or were once more akin to maggots nibbling away at parts of him. Charming.

In any case, the dwarves were practically superhuman when it came to their ingenuity, able to infuse magnificent items with incredible magic. Hence numerous accounts of Æsir turning to dwarves in times of need.

Which only increases the tragedy that the Æsir weren't present when the dwarves needed them, i.e. when the giants conquered Svartalfheim.
