Bárid's Viking father, Ímair (pronounced Ivar and not to be confused - as some historians have - with the colorful Ragnarsson fellow), raided Ireland with some regularity, enjoiying himself so much that he eventually brought his entire family from Norway to join the fun. They settled in Dublin, its own small kingdom. In fact, Ímair rose to become actual king of that storied city!
As a Viking city surrounded by Irish kingdoms, Dublin existed under constant threat and largely burned by the Irish in a siege that resulted in Ímair's death. Bárid thus inherited a kingdom in tatters. Showing a talent for commerce, he rebuilt Dublin into a trading hub with connections across the known world.
