"My only fear is that we become like them."

One of the leaders of the rebellion, Beshi pledged his life to Ali ibn Muhammad after he freed him from slavery. He then served as Ali's second-in-command, confidante and conscience. Calm, measured and empathetic, Beshi tried to curb Ali's violent and volatile impulses; he sensed they did more harm than good to the cause.
