Danaos was the twin brother of Aigyptos and the father of 50 daughters in Greek mythology.
According to the stories, Danaos' daughters were supposed to marry his brother's 50 sons. As a wedding present from their father, each of Danaos' daughters received a dagger, and a command to kill their husbands. All but Hypermnestra obeyed, and a shrine for the 49 slain sons was set up in Argos, Argolis.[1]
In 5th century BCE, a cave within Promontory of Skylla in Argolis was named after Danaos. When the Spartan misthios Kassandra explored the cave during the Peloponnesian War, she found it had become an abode of wolves.[1]
