Copper is a chemical element with a pinkish-orange hue, which is commonly used as a component of alloys, most notably bronze. The metal is malleable and has high thermal and electrical conductivity, bending and melting with ease.[1]
History
Copper Age
The Chalcolithic [Chalcolithic (English: /ˌkælkəˈlɪθɪk/; from Greek: χαλκός khalkós, "copper" and λίθος líthos, "stone")[2]; Eneolithic[3], from Latin aeneus[4] "of copper"] was an archaeological period characterized by the increasing use of smelted copper.[5] It followed the Neolithic and preceded the Bronze Age. It occurred at different periods in different areas, but was absent in some parts of the world, such as Russia, where there was no well-defined Copper Age between the Stone and Bronze ages[6]. Stone tools[7] were still predominantly used during this period.[8]
In ancient Rome, the metal was mostly imported from Cyprus, after which the metal was named.[1]
In 11th century England, copper was used by the Anglo-Saxons for things such as horse stirrups[9] and knife handles.[10]
During the Fourth Crusade, the Venetian Navy stole the four bronze horses as ornaments for the Basilica San Marco when the Crusaders captured Constantinople.[11]
In the 15th and 16th centuries, the Spanish Brotherhood of Assassins utilized the metal to forge a number of weapons and armors for use against the Spanish Templars.[12]
During the American Revolutionary War, the Kanien'kehá:ka Assassin Ratonhnhaké:ton traded and used copper, among other things.[13]

Behind the scenes
The Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood description of Copper Ore references the origins of copper's name: what began as aes cyprium ("metal of Cyprus/Cyprian metal") later evolved into various forms, among them the English copper.[14]
