Cnut (c. 990 – 1035), often known under the epithet the Great, was King of England from 1016 until his death, King of Denmark from 1018 until his death, and King of Norway from 1028 until his death.

Biography

His father Sweyn Forkbeard, had seated himself as King of the English in 1013 after dethroning King Æthelred the Unready. Cnut later took the crown himself, after Æthelred again, and his son, Edmund Ironside. With Cnut's death and the death of his progeny, the Wessex dynasty returned to the throne, with Edward the Confessor.[1]
