Advi (died 822) was a bodyguard to the Prince of Thatta and a mentor to Roshan.

Biography

In 819, while tasked to escort the prince's newest employee and inventor Bakhit, Advi foretold him and his assistant Roshan to be careful due to the bandits on their route. Throughout the escort to Thatta, Advi trained his men with tahtib sticks, which caught the attention of Roshan. He explains that tahtib fighting is a custom and a way to deal blows without being fatal, something he never wants to commit. Despite Bakhit's protest, Roshan joined Advi and learned under him and within a month, Advi saw her improve. Arriving at Bakhit's new residence, Advi and his men left while Bakhit and Roshan readied themselves. Fortunately, Advi continued to spar and train Roshan during her off-time away from being Bakhit's assistant.[1]

For the next two years, Advi kept sparring with Roshan and soon developed feelings for her. One night, he was startled by Roshan, whom he held a dagger to her neck. Relieved, Advi told her he was switched to night duty before being tripped by Roshan. After a night of sparring, Advi stated that their fighting was also known as ritual of love and made an advance towards Roshan. However, she rebuffed him and they both sat in silence. After she left for home, Advi followed her and noticed an invention of Bakhit's around a stranger's neck. At Roshan's room, he was greeted by a dagger but despite her unrequited response, he told her that her mentor had been forfeiting on the deal he made with the prince. Before leaving, Advi advised her to be careful.[2]

A year later, Advi felt compelled to reward Roshan on her improvements and mastery of her skills. After sparring with her, he gifted her with an enhanced light sword and a small, thick dagger. Along with the pair of gifts, Advi also handed her a unique set of tahtib sticks, designed by Bakhit himself. Although Roshan told him she loves them, Advi did not pursue his feelings for her due to seeing her stop herself. Throughout the year, Advi practiced Roshan's swordplay while keeping himself at bay on his romantic feelings.[3]

Death and legacy

One evening, Advi intruded into Roshan's room, broke a vase, and informed her of Bakhit's arrest and his household members being executed subsequently. However, he left to wait for Roshan, who wanted to tell the other staff. Unfortunately, the prince's guards barged into the house and arrested Bakhit, while Roshan escaped with Advi over the estate's walls. Venturing through Thatta, both of them made their way through the city until Advi was spotted by his fellow guards. While Roshan hid, Advi was held still and interrogated for Roshan's location. Staying silent, Advi was quickly killed by his fellow guards while Roshan fled, thanking him for his sacrifice.[3]

After Bakhit's arrest, Roshan joined one of his clients, Maryam, who was a madame of a traveling caravan. While joining her as a bookkeeper, Roshan continued to cry over losing Advi and had nightmares of being the cause of his death. Fortunately, the women of the caravan consoled and cared for her. Ultimately, she felt gratitude of Advi's sacrifice and how she could learn and do all she had dreamed.[4]

Personality and traits

Advi's characteristics consisted of his tall appearance, his long arms, and a symmetrical face.[1]

Equipment and skills

Advi used both tahtib sticks as a basis for his combat training, but also referred to fighting with a sword and a dagger.[1]
