Subject 16 or Subject Sixteen is the predecessor of Desmond Miles as a subject for the Animus project of Abstergo (Desmond being the Subject Seventeen).
He wrotes with his own blood the messages on the walls and floors of the laboratory which can be seen by Desmond at the end of the first game using the Eagle Vision.
It is believed that he has Far Eastern origins as one of his ancestors lived an "important event" there according to Lucy's mail to Vidic.
