Civilians are the common people in the Assassin's Creed series, found abundantly throughout the game worlds.

Assassin's Creed

Civilians found in Assassin's Creed react to Altaïr's various "Anti-social" actions, such as free-running through crowded streets or rapidly scaling a building in plain sight. Some may even remark about Altaïr's actions, asking things like "I wonder where he's going?" and "Why is he running like that?" and some particularly vicious citizens might even remark when Altaïr is scaling a building, "Look at him. When he falls, I'm not helping him up and sometimes they throw rocks at Altaïr whilst hes climbing ." Civilians can also act as shields for a fleeing Altaïr, or a hindrance. If he runs into enough of them while sprinting, he will lose his balance and fall to the ground, greatly offending those he ran into. However, if he is shoving his way through a crowd, he may keep up his momentum.

If Altaïr murders a civilian, he suffers a large desynchronization because he broke the first tenet of The Creed.

Assassin's Creed II

Civilians in ACII are very similar to their AC counterparts, yet there are a few more complexities to their reactions. Unlike civilians in Altair's time, the civilians of Italy will sometimes apologize to Ezio if he runs into them, saying things like "Oh, I'm so sorry, amico!" and "I'm sorry sir, it won't happen again." Civilians often crowd around and comment on fights; their comments either indicate which side they support, or an opinion of the fight in general. For example, people supporting you may whisper "Your cause is just. God is on your side!"; those suppporting the guard could state: "You are no better than those you seek to replace!" People have also been heard to have said "Bravi!" during a fight; while people who disapprove shout "Shame on you, you pieces of shit!". Also, if Ezio is free-running through the streets, sometimes a civilian exclaims "He must be late... and she must be beautiful." Sometimes one can bear witness to a couple arguing outside their home, or a worker carrying a crate. If Ezio bumps into a crate-carrying civilian and a guard is nearby, the guard will be alerted to Ezio and shove him. There are also civilians in ACII that are seen painting buildings or repairing walls.

If Ezio murders a civilian, a dialog box appears warning players that "Ezio did not kill civilians." If the player kills three civilians, then the player will be desynchronized.

Civilians will call for the guards if you haven't been caught pickpocketing; if you were caught, then they will start a brawl with you. People will also scold you for looting corpses or unconscious people.
