Charleville musket

The Charleville musket was a French design infantry musket first made in 1717 and last produced during the 1840s.[1] It was 5 feet long, weighing 10 pounds and had a calibre of 8 French lines (approximately 17.5 mm) and could be fitted with bayonets.[2] It was the standard musket used by the French Army during its production,[1] but was also used by the Spanish soldiers stationed in New Orleans at the time of the Louisiana Rebellion[3] as well as the Continental Army under George Washington around 1777.[2]

In February 1765, Assassin Aveline de Grandpré used a Charleville musket to assassinate Louisiana governor Jean-Jacques Blaise d'Abbadie, who had been conspiring with Templar Rafael Joaquín de Ferrer, seeking to keep the colony under French control rather than hand it over to Spain.[4]
