Cadmus was a Greek mercenary once employed by Markos.[1] He was a Sage of the Isu Vejovis.[2]

Biography

While under the employ of Markos, they were hired to find a treasure by Ianthe. However, the map, which indicated the desired treasure within a tomb among the hills of Kephallonia, was stolen. Cadmus tracked down the thief, climbing up a tower to get a better viewpoint. He saw a group of mercenaries moving towards the entrance to the tomb on the cliff-side of a hill, jumped down from the tower, and informed Markos, who said he would guard the area rather then going to confront the mercenaries.[1]

Cadmus climbed up the cliff and entered the tomb, noticing a pile of discarded supplies on a crate near the entrance. As soon as he entered, however, the mercenaries sealed him in, rolling a boulder over the entrance. With no other choice, Cadmus took a lit torch and pressed on, finding more torches, as well as ladders already in place and the remains of a campsite, evidence that they had been here for some time at that point.[1]

Eventually, Cadmus came upon a flat wall marked with symbols and notches and figured out that he could place torches in those slots, unlocking it to reveal a dark stone entrance. The walls became smooth, straight, and angular as Cadmus walked through the strange location, coming up to a room with a circular podium. A hologram of an Isu woman appeared and addressed Cadmus and an "spectator", saying that she was here to help and that ahead was an item that must be kept safe. She also mentioned a person she called The Connection, saying that his actions would lead to the destruction of all if the Piece of Eden should fall in his hands and urging Cadmus to split the item up and to take the pieces far away. The hologram faded and Cadmus stepped forward to a metal container, unlocking it and revealing a two-sided dagger. Cadmus picked it up, carefully using some material to not directly touch the item before sliding it into his pouch.[1]

The sound of clapping made Cadmus turn to see five men with masks and cloaks behind him, the man in the middle thanking Cadmus while a sixth man hit him over the head, knocking him to the floor and taking the dagger. The group left, smashing a pot filled with oil on their way out, trapping Cadmus behind a wall of flames. Cadmus found another way out, an elevating platform leading to a tunnel that in turn led outside.[1]

He scrambled downhill in search of the six men, but finding Markos instead. After explaining what had happened, he spotted his attackers heading to the nearby town and chose to "follow them and make them pay". Instead of picking a fight with all of them, Cadmus figured that if he killed their leader the rest of them might flee, but the leader saw Cadmus and ran away. Cadmus caught up with the man easily enough and jumped on top of him but not before the man managed to draw the dagger, with one blade pointed towards him and another towards Cadmus. Cadmus managed to shift his body enough that he was injured, but not fatally so, while the other blade fatally wounded the other man, who revealed himself as their client, Ianthe. While dying, Ianthe said that he was "but a small part of the machine" and part of a greater cause, as well as saying that the mere knowledge of the item meant Cadmus had to die.[1]

Cadmus retrieved the dagger, just in time for a blade to be thrown towards him by one of the other men. Of the four, two ran away after Ianthe's death but the other two decided to attack. While defending himself with the dagger, it split in two, one half in Cadmus' hands and another flew to embed itself on the face of a mercenary. The remaining attacker went to his fallen companion, tore the blade from his eye, and ran for the docks, with Cadmus going after him. He jumped to a moving ship which Cadmus tried to reach but could not, falling into the water.[1]

Markos arrived at the docks and helped Cadmus out of the water before suggesting that they sell the remaining blade to make money, but Cadmus rejected the idea, arguing that it was too valuable and must be kept from those "masked men" at all costs. Cadmus also decided to leave Kephallonia.[1]
