Kassandra sabotaging a brazier

A brazier is a container used to burn solid fuel, such as wood or charcoal, for a sustained flame which is often used for heating or cooking. It often takes the form of a metal box or bowl with feet.[1]

In 5th century BCE Greece, during the Peloponnesian War,[2] as well as in 1st century BCE Ptolemaic Egypt and Roman Cyrenaica,[3] brazier were used by the respective militaries as a way to call for reinforcements, should their bases ever be attacked. However, construction of these braziers were fairly flimsy and allowed for them be sabotaged to explode if lit.[3][2]
