Borki train disaster
The Borki train disaster was an event in which the Russian Imperial train, which had been carrying Tsar Alexander III of Russia and his family, derailed near Borki station.
Infiltration
On October 29, the Imperial train left Crimea for Petrograd. The Assassin Nikolai Orelov, was tasked with infiltrating the train, killing Alexander and claiming the Royal Staff. Racing the train's speed on horseback, Nikolai managed to catch up with the train and jump from the horse on to the train and transversed from above. Dispatching a Tsar guard, who protected the entrance to the inner cart, Orelov proceeded inside. Dispatching one guard with his dagger and interrogating another with his blade at the throat, the guard confessed that the Tsar would be found in the dining cart.[1]
Proceeding to the dining cart, while preparing for a battle, Nikolai fought several guards protecting the dining cart, with the aid of his hidden blade and rifle. Nikolai then prepared to shoot the Tsar with his rifle and bursted into the dining cart. However, to Nikolai's shock, the Tsar was absent from the dining cart, instead he found his innocent family. After this worried shock, Nikolai realized the presence of someone behind him. And thus Alexander engaged in a fray. Though the Tsar was able to secure Nikolai and strangle him, the Assassin was able to drive his blade into the Tsar's abdomen, though barely injuring him.[1]
Battle with Tsar
During the engagement, the train suddenly derailed and careened off the tracks. At one point during the disaster, Nikolai was able to barely recover before Alexander arrived to finish the battle. Taunting him about killing his loved ones while beating Orelov down, the Tsar then rummaged around the remains of the train, while pulling a case from the dining cart remains. While speaking of his father being a good, noble, but also weak man, he continued claiming that he had more power than his predecessor could have dreamed of.[1]
The Tsar then revealed the Staff to Nikolai and asked if it was what he was looking for. The Tsar then tossed the Staff to Nikolai challenging him to a duel. However, even with the Staff in possession Alexander was able to disarm Nikolai and overpower him. However, hearing the cry of his family the Tsar left to save them via lifting the roof of his carriage upon his shoulder, so as to let his family escape the wreckage. Nikolai was able to escape, barely alive, and report his mission as a complete failure.[1]
