A bident is a two-pronged polearm conventionally designed for fishing but which can be improvised as a combat weapon.
Description
As its name implies, a bident consists of a large, two-pronged fork mounted atop a long shaft that is most often made of wood. The chief role of the implement is in fishing, where its sharp prongs are used to skewer fishes in water. When the necessity for war or defense arises, however, the bident can prove just as effective against people as it is against fish.[1]
Combat with bidents rely principally on thrusting as given their design, they are not adapted for cutting or slashing. The type of bident in service with the Parisian Brotherhood of Assassins during the French Revolution boasted undulating prongs in a manner similar to that of flameberge blades.[1]
History
During the French Revolution, the Parisian Brotherhood boasted a wide variety of weapons in their armory and among them was the bident.[1]
