Actually, going back in time would not necessarily mean losing all the upgrades. The Armor of Brutus allows the usage of dual hidden blades, implying that in Roman times Assassins perhaps already used dual hidden blades but the concept was somehow discarded by the Late Middle Ages. The poison weapons could also still be in the game. The Assassin Iltani used poison to kill Alexander the Great during the 4th century BCE, and poison was only not allowed to be used by Al Mualim and perhaps the other Mentors of the Levantine Assassins (except Altaïr, that is). Crossbows have been used since the 5th century BCE, so that should also not be a problem. Bombs and guns would be a problem though, yes...
